Abstract

Objective: The postpartum period is characterized by significant physical, biological, hormonal, and psychological changes that affect not only the mother's physical health but also her psychosocial well-being. Adequate support during this period is essential for both maternal health and infant well-being. This review aimed to emphasize the impact of maternal emotional well-being on postpartum quality of life and to highlight the importance of Jean Ball's "Mother's Emotional Well-Being: The Deck-Chair Theory" in guiding healthcare professionals, particularly midwives, in supporting mothers during the postpartum period.

Methods: A narrative review was conducted focusing on maternal emotional well-being, social support, postpartum quality of life, and Jean Ball's theoretical framework. Relevant concepts related to the mother's personal characteristics, family and social support, and professional healthcare support were examined within the context of postpartum care.

Results: The postpartum period increases mothers' need for social support due to the simultaneous development and adaptation processes experienced by both mother and infant. Emotional well-being influences mothers' ability to cope with stressors and directly affects their quality of life. According to Jean Ball's theory, postpartum well-being depends on the balance among three key factors: the mother's individual characteristics, support from family and the social environment, and professional care provided by healthcare professionals. Maintaining this balance contributes positively to mothers' emotional and psychological health.

Conclusion: Maternal emotional well-being is a crucial determinant of postpartum quality of life. Assessing mothers' social support levels, strengthening support systems, and providing effective professional care are essential responsibilities of healthcare professionals, especially midwives. Jean Ball's "Mother's Emotional Well-Being: The Deck-Chair Theory" offers a valuable framework for promoting maternal psychological and emotional well-being and improving the quality of postpartum care.
